G-Research is a London firm that uses mathematics, statistics and machine learning to predict how prices in financial markets will move, and trades on those predictions. It does not advise clients or manage outside money in the usual way. Its business is research that turns into trading.

Researchers look for faint patterns in huge amounts of market and other data, test whether a pattern would really have made money, and hand the ones that survive to systems that trade automatically. Most of the firm is engineers and technologists who build what that research runs on, such as computing clusters, data platforms, low-delay trading systems and the security that protects the firm's methods.

A junior quantitative researcher spends the day on data and models, writing code to test ideas and presenting results to senior researchers who decide what goes live. A junior engineer builds and maintains a part of the technology, often with far more computing power than a university or a tech company offers. Students can join through summer research and engineering internships.
