What the job is
You join a two-year graduate programme at Standard Chartered, learning how large loans and bonds are structured, sold on to other lenders and managed as a portfolio. The programme sits in Corporate & Investment Banking, the part of the bank that lends to and advises large companies, governments and financial institutions. When a bank arranges a big loan or bond for a client it rarely keeps all the risk itself. A syndicate desk prices the deal and sells slices of it to other banks and investors. Portfolio management then watches everything the bank has kept on its books, so that its capital, the money it must hold against possible losses, is used well.
You are placed in one of the following teams. Credit Portfolio Analytics manages how the bank uses its financial resources and its credit portfolio, balancing risk against return. Credit Portfolio Management produces analysis from data to help the bank understand its clients and its loan book and find ways to improve returns. Syndicate and Financing Risk supports the structuring, pricing, risk management and distribution of loans and bonds.
