Summer internship / summer analyst
A summer internship is a paid placement of several weeks over the summer, doing the real work of a team alongside its analysts. At most banks and many investment firms it is the main route to a graduate job, because the firm hires much of its graduate intake from the interns it already knows.
You join one team, or rotate between two, and are given live work such as building models, preparing pages for clients, researching companies or supporting trades. At the end the team decides whether to offer you a full-time place after you graduate, so the summer works as a long interview.
Most people do it in the summer before their final year at university, and applications usually open the autumn before. A summer analyst and a summer associate are the same programme at two levels, the second for people coming from a master's degree, an MBA or another career.
