Industrial placement / placement year
An industrial placement, often called a placement year or sandwich year, is a year working at a firm in the middle of a degree, usually between the second and final year. You are paid, you do the work of a full member of the team, and you go back to university afterwards to finish.
Firms that offer them, mostly large banks, insurers and asset managers, either rotate people between teams or place them for the year in one area such as operations, risk, technology or markets. It is a long time in one place, so you leave with real responsibility on your record and people who know your work well.
Many firms invite their strongest people on placement back for a graduate role, sometimes with an offer made before the final year starts. Your university usually has to approve the placement, so check how your course handles a year in industry before you apply.
