Investment banking division
The Investment Banking Division advises companies, governments and funds on their biggest money decisions, buying or selling businesses, and raising money. The bank advises rather than investing its own money, and is mostly paid a fee when a deal completes.
It is split two ways. Coverage teams are organised by industry, such as healthcare or technology, and own the relationship with each client. Product teams are organised by the kind of deal, mergers and acquisitions (M&A), raising shares (ECM), raising debt (DCM), debt for private equity buyouts (Leveraged Finance) and fixing companies in trouble (Restructuring). Coverage brings in the client; product runs the deal.
An analyst builds financial models and valuations, writes the pitch books used to win work, prepares the documents buyers and investors read, and keeps a deal's many workstreams moving. Hours are long and set by the deal, not the clock. A posting that says IBD, Corporate Finance, Advisory or Coverage is hiring here. The product groups each have their own page on Learn.
