Job

Private capital advisory

Greenhill (now Mizuho) PE Advisory · Associate

Secondaries investor

What the job is

You advise investors and fund managers who want to sell, or reshape, their stakes in private equity funds before those funds end. Private equity money is usually locked up for many years, so a secondary sale is how an owner gets cash out early by selling to a new buyer.

The seat is an associate in the Secondary Advisory team, part of Private Capital Advisory at Mizuho | Greenhill. You work on two kinds of deal. In an LP-led sale, an investor in a fund sells its stakes to a buyer. In a GP-led deal, the manager of the fund arranges it, for example by moving its best companies into a continuation vehicle, a new fund that lets existing investors either cash out or stay in.

As an associate you sit between the senior bankers who win and lead the deals and the analysts and interns who build much of the first draft. You run the day to day work and check what the junior team produces.
