What this title actually means

A ten-week summer internship in London starting June 2027, in equity research at Rothschild & Co Redburn. Applications opened on 19 August 2026; the firm recruits on a rolling basis, accepting applications and interviewing continuously once applications are open, and encourages early submission. It is aimed at students in their second or penultimate year of university. Source

The firm's description of the job: an equity research analyst provides industrial insight and analysis into a company or sector, and its analysts produce detailed arguments for buying or selling the equity of a company. Its analysts and salespeople then debate the buy or sell case with clients, often in face-to-face meetings. A research department is typically split into coverage groups each focused on a specific sector, and Redburn has over 90 analysts based in London working across 24 research sectors plus quantitative and technical analysis teams. Source

'Research' here means sell-side equity research, and the client is the investor, not the company. That is the whole difference from banking. In banking your work supports a transaction and stays private; here you publish a view - buy or sell, with a number on it - and then defend it in a room to a fund manager who is paid to disagree with you. It is also the one junior finance job where being right is measurable, which cuts both ways.

Over 90 analysts across 24 sectors in a single London office is a large research floor by any current standard, and it tells you the shape of the seat: you are attached to one sector team, not rotating. Ten weeks on European luxury goods and ten weeks on semiconductors are different summers, and the sector you land in is the thing to have an opinion about before you apply.

The team

Our record carries no team for this row, and the page names no coverage group. What it does say is that research is split into sector coverage groups and that Redburn runs 24 of them, so the desk exists and this page simply does not tell you which one you would join. Ask which sectors are taking interns, and name a preference - an applicant with a considered view on one sector is a different proposition from one who wants 'research'.

The allocation is not yours to make: the firm says that while it will endeavour to match placements within a requested team, successful applicants may be offered placements in alternative teams it considers a more suitable fit, subject to individual and Rothschild & Co Redburn requirements. Source

The page sets research alongside the rest of the business: Redburn's analysts and salespeople advise professional investors on European and US equities, its sales traders and execution teams transact those clients' business, its expert access team links investors to industry executives and independent experts, and its equity capital markets team serves corporates raising equity. Source

The firm

Rothschild & Co Redburn is the group's equities business, whose stated purpose in research, execution and equity capital markets is to help clients generate superior investment performance, built on intellectual freedom, commercial research, best execution and premium client service. Redburn and Atlantic Equities were both formed in 2003 - Redburn on European equities, Atlantic on US - and merged under Rothschild & Co ownership in 2023. The firm says it uniquely seats US and European research together in London. Source

321 people have held London roles at Rothschild & Co as a whole since 2018. Read that as the group's London footprint, not this floor's: the units the record holds beneath it are the advisory and wealth businesses, and none of them is Redburn, so the record shows nothing about how many people sit in Redburn research.

What this posting signals

A June 2027 start advertised from 19 August 2026 is the annual campus cycle running ten months ahead. Research classes at independent houses are small - one or two per sector at most - so the practical consequence of 'rolling' is sharper here than at a bank: the seat you want may be gone before the winter, and there is no closing date to warn you.

Equity research is an entry point that behaves differently from banking's. It is judged on written output from the first week, so the sample of your own work - a note on a company you actually follow, with a recommendation and a reason - is worth more in this application than another round of technical prep. Nothing on the page asks for it, and that is exactly why it stands out.

Are you eligible?

Aimed at students in their second or penultimate year of university, on track for a minimum of a 2:1 or equivalent. The firm asks for a genuine interest in corporate finance with good commercial awareness; excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication; teamwork alongside the ability to work independently; strong quantitative, numerical and analytical skills, comfortable working accurately with numbers and writing prose; drive and motivation; creativity and independent thinking; and resilience. The programme opens with intensive classroom training covering accounting, valuation and modelling. Source

Notice 'writing prose' sitting inside the numerical requirement, and 'independent thinking' listed as a competency in its own right. On a research floor those are the job, not soft skills: the deliverable is an argument someone pays to read. No degree subject, graduation window or right-to-work condition is stated anywhere on the page, so those filters live in the application form.
