You turn the design of a custom computer chip into the exact physical layout a factory can build, for Hudson River Trading's Hardware team. The Hardware team builds fast computing engines from FPGA and ASIC chips, two kinds of special chip, which make trading decisions with very little delay.

Physical design is a late stage in making an ASIC. Other engineers have already described what the chip should do, and you work out where every part sits on the silicon and how the parts connect, so the finished chip runs as fast as it should.
