You test the custom computer chips Hudson River Trading designs for trading, making sure each design does exactly what it should before it is used. The Hardware team builds fast computing engines from FPGA and ASIC chips, two kinds of special chip, to make trading decisions with very little delay. Verification is the step that proves a chip's design is correct, and because these chips make trading decisions, it is a core part of the team's work.

Engineers on the team also build their own testing tools, and some maintain open source projects such as Slang, Verilator and Cocotb, software that anyone can use and improve.
