Natural resources and energy covers the companies that produce and move the world's raw materials and power. That means oil and gas producers, mining and metals companies, power generators and utilities, and the businesses building renewable energy and the move away from fossil fuels.
These businesses spend heavily and for a long time before they earn anything, and their income rises and falls with commodity prices they do not control. So bankers and investors in this sector spend much of their time on reserves, production costs, price scenarios and how a company would cope if prices fell. Regulation, government policy and the pressure to cut carbon shape almost every deal.
A coverage team here advises on takeovers and on raising money, including project finance for new mines, fields, power plants and wind or solar farms.
