Wealth management

Looking after the money of wealthy people and families, from investing it to planning what happens to it.

Wealth management looks after the money of wealthy individuals and families, investing it, planning it and passing it on. Clients are typically entrepreneurs, senior executives and families with significant savings; the minimum a firm will take varies widely. Private banks and wealth managers are usually paid a yearly fee on the money they manage, plus fees for lending and other services.

A relationship manager, sometimes called a private banker, owns each client and understands their whole situation. Investment advisers and portfolio managers run the client's investments. Specialists handle tax, pensions, lending and passing wealth to the next generation.

A junior supports the relationship managers. Preparing client reviews and portfolio reports, researching investment ideas, and handling the checks every new client must pass. The work is built on trust and discretion, and relationships last years rather than one deal. Giving advice to clients is regulated, so expect the firm to put you through professional qualifications early on.
