Research
Analysts who study companies and markets and write their views for the bank's investor clients.
Research is the team that studies companies, industries and economies and publishes its views for investors. At a bank, equity research analysts each cover a list of companies in one sector. They build a model of each company, publish notes after results and news, give each stock a rating and a price target, and talk to the fund managers who read their work. Credit research does the same for company bonds. Economists and strategists write about the economy, interest rates and markets as a whole.
Asset managers and hedge funds have research teams too, but they write only for their own portfolio managers and publish nothing.
A junior updates the models when a company reports, gathers data, drafts the first version of notes and prepares for calls with companies and clients. Results seasons are the busy weeks. European rules changed how investors pay for bank research in 2018, and teams became leaner as a result. Research remains one of the best training grounds for learning how to value a company, and a common route to the buy-side.
