'Asset Management' is a different business from the bank most students picture, and the difference is who the client is. In banking you advise a company on a transaction and are paid a fee; in asset management you are given money by an institution and are judged on what you do with it. The seat is the investor's, not the adviser's, and the clock is different too: a deal has a signing date, a portfolio just has next quarter.
'Public Investing' is the token that narrows it, and Goldman's own sentence gives you the split: the division delivers 'across traditional public investing and alternative investments'. Public means listed markets, equities and bonds bought and sold on an exchange. Alternatives means the private side: private credit, private equity, real estate, infrastructure. So expect company and market research, portfolio construction and client reporting rather than diligence on a leveraged buyout, and if it is deals you want, this is the wrong Goldman row to spend an application on.
