Goldman is looking for an Associate to join its Consumer Retail Investment Banking team in London. The header gives Division, Global Banking and Markets; Function, Banker - Industry/Country Coverage; Corporate title, Associate; Location, London. The page carries a date of 1 April 2026. Source
Four tokens, and one of them is Goldman's own jargon. 'Global Banking and Markets' is the division holding both the advisory bank and the trading business. 'Investment Banking' is the advisory half of it. 'Classic' is a label the page never expands - so ignore it and read the function field instead, which says Banker, Industry/Country Coverage, and the responsibilities, which are M&A plus equity and fixed income issuance for consumer and retail clients. In plain terms: this is the traditional sector coverage banking seat, the one most people mean when they say investment banking.
'Associate' with a stated minimum of three years' investment banking experience is a lateral hire onto a live desk - the realistic applicant is a third-year analyst being promoted out of another bank, or an Associate moving across. It is not a graduate route and it is not an internship, whatever the word Analyst-adjacent seniority ladders might suggest. Note what the posting adds to the job at this level: Associates are expected to coordinate tax advisers, attorneys and bankers, lead due diligence and take part in negotiating legal documentation - running the process rather than feeding it.
The team
The team is Consumer Retail investment banking in London. The posting's account of the Associate's job: develop financial models and customised valuation analysis; work on M&A transactions and fixed income and equity issuances; organise and prepare presentations explaining industry trends and assessing clients' situations; coordinate teams of tax advisers, attorneys and bankers; lead due diligence and participate in negotiating legal documentation; and take an integral part in the apprenticeship culture through the training and mentoring of analysts and interns. What the patch involves, from our own consumer and retail orientation: eight sub-sectors with wildly different economics - FMCG, luxury, apparel, food and beverage, restaurants and QSR, e-commerce and direct-to-consumer, grocery, and specialty and travel retail. FMCG trades on 12-18x EV/EBITDA, luxury 15-30x, grocery only 6-10x, so knowing which box a target sits in matters before you touch a multiple. The working vocabulary is like-for-like growth, sell-through, markdown rate, inventory days, margins and four-wall EBITDA, and the classic diligence tripwires are inventory rising faster than revenue, deteriorating negative working capital in grocery, and channel stuffing at quarter-end. 232 people have held London roles in Goldman Sachs' investment banking division since 2018 - the largest single London unit for the firm. there is no separate figure for the consumer and retail desk itself, so that number is the division, not the room: a sector coverage team inside it is a handful of bankers, and this seat sits above the analysts on it.
The firm
779 people have held London roles at Goldman Sachs as a whole since 2018, across banking, markets, research and asset management - the deepest single-firm bench in our London data, and the reason it is usually possible to find someone who has sat on the desk you are asking about.
What this posting signals
The page carries a date of 1 April 2026 and it is now several months on. A single named seat on one sector desk, still advertised months later, is either close to filled or genuinely hard to fill; both point the same way, which is to apply now and ask directly rather than to prepare slowly. We do not mark a posting closed without positive evidence, so treat it as live until Goldman says otherwise.
If you are a student, this row is not something you can apply to - but it is not useless to you either. It says the London consumer and retail desk is adding at Associate level, which is a sign of a busy patch, and it lists exactly what that desk expects a junior to be able to do. The entry route to the same team is Goldman's summer analyst class, and this page is a fair description of the job that class leads to three years later.
Are you eligible?
Basic qualifications: a minimum of three years' investment banking or equivalent experience; excellent presentation and communication skills; strong financial modelling; exceptional work ethic, motivation and attention to detail; a strong team orientation with a demonstrated ability to work with people across several groups and regions; experience in training and mentoring more junior team members; and a history of outstanding academic and professional achievement. Source
Two of those lines do more filtering than the headline three years. 'Experience in training and mentoring more junior team members' is written as a requirement, which a third-year analyst has and a career-changer from outside banking generally does not; and 'or equivalent experience' is the only door left ajar, so if you are coming from an adjacent seat you have to argue that equivalence yourself. Nothing on the page addresses visa sponsorship, right to work or a start date, so all three belong in the first conversation.
Ready to apply?
No deadline given, so it closes when the places fill.
Most junior seats are filled by someone writing to the right person before a portal
fills up. Here is one of the people Goldman Sachs publishes, in full.
1 person. Their role, the page the firm names them on, and how to reach them
The route that always works, and the one they are most likely to read.
The firm publishes this person, and publishes no address we could read for anyone here, so there is no pattern to show you either. Search their name and firm on LinkedIn and write from your own account.
