DCM is the half of capital markets that moves in debt rather than equity, and the bank sits between issuers and investors - insurers, pension funds, asset managers, banks - running five stages: origination, structuring, syndication, execution, aftermarket. It is continuous and credit-driven: unlike equity, a market tantrum rarely slams the debt window shut, so the question is price, not feasibility. Italian is the gate and it is absolute. 'Proficient' on a coverage desk means taking a call from a treasurer in Milan and reading a prospectus, not a language module three years ago. No amount of modelling clears it, and applying without it wastes an afternoon.

The flip side is the useful half. If you do have Italian - or Italian and German - plus a year in DCM, leveraged finance, ECM or an accounting firm, the field for this exact seat is very small. Language-gated coverage roles in London are the least contested rows on any bank's careers page, and that stays true for the graduate cycle too: put your languages on the CV where they can be seen.
