What the job is
You help companies in financial trouble either fix their debts or close down in an orderly way, while training as a chartered accountant. This is a graduate job in the Restructuring & Insolvency team at Alvarez & Marsal, starting in September 2027 in the London office. Restructuring means changing what a company owes and to whom so that it can keep going. Insolvency is what happens when a company cannot pay its debts, and the law then sets out how what is left gets shared among the people it owes.
The seat serves two kinds of situation. In some, a business is struggling but can still be saved, and the team works out a plan to rescue it. In others, rescue is no longer possible, and the team runs a formal legal process to sell what the company owns and pay back as much as it can to its lenders and suppliers. That money paid back is called recoveries.
