Buy-Side
The buy side is the part of finance that invests money, buying shares, bonds, companies, loans and property with the aim of making it grow. It includes asset managers, hedge funds, private equity firms, pension funds, insurers and sovereign wealth funds.
Buy-side firms are the clients of the sell side. They use banks to trade, read their research and buy the securities banks sell, but the decision about where the money goes is theirs, and so is the result.
Teams are usually smaller than in a bank and hire fewer people straight from university, often preferring a few years of experience elsewhere first. The work centres on judging investments and watching them over time, and the hours tend to be steadier than on the sell side, though that varies by firm.
