Sustainable finance / ESG

Sustainable finance is the part of finance that takes environmental, social and governance questions into account when money is lent or invested. ESG is the short form of those three words, which cover a company's effect on the climate and nature, how it treats its people and communities, and how it is run.

In a bank, sustainable finance teams help companies raise green bonds and sustainability-linked loans, where the money goes to specific environmental projects or the interest rate depends on meeting agreed targets. At an asset manager or investment fund, ESG teams assess the companies in a portfolio, press them on these questions as shareholders and report to clients on the results.

The work sits between finance, science and regulation. Rules on what may be called green or sustainable have tightened, so teams spend a good deal of time checking that claims are backed by evidence. A posting in this area may sit in a banking team, a research team or a specialist group of its own.
