Equity research
Equity research is the team inside a bank that studies listed companies and tells investors whether their shares are worth buying. Each analyst covers a group of companies in one sector, such as banks, retailers or oil companies, and becomes the person investors call when one of them is in the news.
For every company they cover, the team keeps a financial model forecasting its revenue, profits and cash. They publish a rating, buy, hold or sell, with a price target, write a note soon after each set of results, and write longer reports when they change their view. The readers are fund managers and hedge funds, who judge the team on how useful its thinking is and how quickly it responds.
Someone starting out updates the models after every results announcement, gathers data and charts, drafts the first version of notes and joins calls with company management and investors. It is one of the best places to learn how to value a company properly, and a common route to asset management and hedge funds. The wider Research division has its own page on Learn.
