You spend a summer at Jane Street working with its quantitative researchers on the models and data behind its trading strategies. A quantitative researcher looks for market signals, patterns in data that say where a price should be or which way it is heading, and turns them into models and strategies the firm trades with. The internship is built to show you that job from the inside. You spend most of it on projects drawn from full-time researchers' own work, and the rest in classes and seminars on how markets and trading work.

The lines between research, technology and trading are deliberately blurred at the firm, so the work you do sits close to the people who build the systems and run the trades. The methods are not fixed. Depending on the problem you might use a simple linear model or deep learning.
