You spend a summer at Jane Street training machine learning models on market data, working alongside its full time researchers on live trading problems in London.

Jane Street is a trading firm. It buys and sells in financial markets using strategies it designs and builds itself, and machine learning, which means software that learns patterns from data rather than following rules a person wrote, is a growing part of how those strategies are made. As an intern you are given a project drawn from a researcher's own work and you take it from a question to a result. At trading firms a summer internship of this kind often works as a long interview, because the firm hires much of its graduate intake from the interns it already knows.
