Who to write to at PAI Partners

What this title actually means

This is a six-month paid internship in PAI Partners' ESG team, on-site in central London. The firm invites recent undergraduates and current and recent postgraduate students with the right to work in the United Kingdom to apply, and says the programme is there because it wants to support the development of the next generation of ESG leaders and to attract talented individuals from a wide range of backgrounds. Source

The work, as listed: supporting the ESG team on risk mitigation and value creation across key themes including climate change, nature, supply chain and social topics; supporting the team in ESG due diligence processes and portfolio management; contributing to internal and external ESG communication materials such as investor presentations and external ESG questionnaires; and contributing to ESG support for portfolio companies, for example benchmarking and value creation. Source

Two tokens, and the second one is the one people misread. 'ESG' is environmental, social and governance - but here it is a function inside a buyout firm, not a sector you cover or an asset class you invest in. The companies you would be working on are ones PAI already owns or is in the middle of buying, which is why the list runs due diligence, portfolio management and investor questionnaires rather than sourcing or modelling. '6-months' is the other real token: a half-year block, not a summer. If what you want is the private equity investment team, this is not that seat and it does not automatically lead there. If what you want is sustainability work done inside a buyout firm with more than €30bn under management, with real diligence as the setting rather than reporting, it is a rare thing to find at this level.

The team

Our row carries no team, and the page is not much better: it says 'the ESG team' four times and never says how many people that is, who leads it, or who you would report to. That gap matters more than it sounds. On a team of three, an intern's benchmarking work goes straight into an investment committee paper; on a team of fifteen it goes into a queue. Ask the size and the reporting line in your first exchange - it is a normal question and the answer tells you what six months there would actually be worth.

What PAI does say about the function: it describes itself as one of the first private equity houses to develop an integrated approach to ESG and sustainability management, says its purpose is to create value for all stakeholders including investors, portfolio companies, employees and the communities it operates in, and says it integrates ESG considerations into its investment process and works actively with portfolio companies to make them more sustainable. It points applicants to its public Sustainability Reports and Responsible Investment Policy. Source

The firm

PAI Partners is a private equity firm doing leveraged buyouts - acquiring majority stakes in mid- to large-sized companies across four core industry sectors - with more than €30bn in assets under management. Its investors are international institutions, pension funds, insurance companies, sovereign wealth funds, banks, funds of funds, family offices and high net worth individuals. Source

16 people have held London roles at PAI Partners as a whole since 2018. That is a small London population, which is what you would expect of a European buyout firm whose London office is one of several - it means a six-month intern is a visible fraction of the building, not an anonymous one.

Our unit-level figure for the same firm is 7 people in London roles since 2018, and the two numbers describe overlapping things rather than different ones - our organisational map of PAI has a single London node carrying the firm's own name, so it does not separate the investment team from ESG or anything else. Take the honest reading: our coverage of this firm in London is thin and in the low tens, enough to tell you the office is small and not enough to break it down by team.

What this posting signals

This row opened on 26 January 2026, and it is now September. A six-month internship advertised in January was almost certainly for a 2026 start, which means the seat this page describes has most likely already been filled and run. We do not mark a posting closed on absence alone and PAI has not said it is closed, so it stays live and unverified here - but do not treat an eight-month-old form as your route in. The useful move is to write to PAI and ask when the next six-month ESG intake opens, and to have your application ready for it.

No deadline is stated, and the form asks when you are earliest available to start rather than pointing at a fixed start date. That is the shape of a rolling intake: they take someone when a seat opens and when that person can begin, not on a class date. It means being early is worth more than being polished, and it means an availability answer that is vague costs you.

Are you eligible?

Stated requirements: authorised to live and work in the United Kingdom, marked required; a bachelor's or master's degree in sciences, social, environmental or business studies; one or more years of previous work experience desired; a passion for sustainability-related topics; fluency in English as a prerequisite, with other European languages desirable; the ability to work autonomously with a hands-on, proactive approach; strong analytical and reporting skills and attention to detail. Previous experience in ESG, CSR or sustainability consulting practices, or in a corporate sustainability department, is a strong plus. The application form itself asks whether you hold a relevant sustainability degree or have worked in a sustainability role, whether you are fluent in English at C1 level, and whether you have the legal right to work in the United Kingdom. Source

The application asks for two written answers of up to 200 words each: why you are interested in private equity and in PAI Partners specifically, including any sustainability initiatives PAI or its peers are working on that you would like to contribute to; and why you would like to pursue a career in sustainability. Both carry the same instruction - 'we are seeking your personal views, not those of AI'. You also give your earliest available start date and upload a CV. Source

The degree line is the thing worth reading twice, because it is wider than almost anything else in London finance: sciences, social, environmental or business studies. An environmental science, geography or politics student is inside the stated bar here in a way they are not on a banking row, and the firm is explicit that it wants a wide range of backgrounds. The hard gate is the other one - the right to work in the UK is marked required and is asked as a yes-or-no question on the form, so there is no sponsorship conversation to be had.

Those two 200-word questions are the application, not a formality attached to it. One of them asks you to name a sustainability initiative PAI or a peer is working on - which is a check that you have read the Sustainability Reports the posting links to, and most applicants will not have. Read one, take one specific thing from it, and write about that. The instruction that they want your views and not an AI's is on the page twice; treat it as meant.
