What this title actually means

Moelis & Company is hiring a Financial Sponsors Analyst in London, posted 6 May 2026. The posting says the Analyst will sit at the centre of Moelis' European Financial Sponsor Coverage, supporting senior bankers in the development of sponsor relationships, the origination of transaction opportunities and the coordination of sponsor-related activity across the European platform, reporting to a Managing Director alongside broader senior members of the team. Source

'Sponsors' is the Financial Sponsors Group: the bank's coverage group for financial sponsors, meaning private equity firms, infrastructure funds, credit funds and sovereign wealth funds. It does not execute deals, it originates them, sitting between the fund and the bank's execution teams in M&A, leveraged finance, DCM and ECM. Where M&A is organised by sector, FSG is organised by sponsor, so one banker covers a firm across all its deals and all products, and the edge is knowing the fund's portfolio, dry powder, decision-makers and preferences. Source

'Analyst' here is not the graduate analyst seat it looks like. The posting asks for a minimum of one year in investment banking, transaction advisory or an accountancy firm, and it sits on Moelis' experienced-hires board rather than its campus pipeline. This is a lateral hire into one named desk, whatever the off-cycle tag on our row says. If you are a student or a finalist with no full-time experience, this posting is not open to you and no cover letter will change that.

The team

Our own record carries no team for this row, but the posting names the desk itself: European Financial Sponsors coverage, reporting to a Managing Director on that team. Do not read the empty tag as an unknown seat. Read it as the record being thinner than the advert, and take the desk from the advert.

The posting sets out who you would work with: European Financial Sponsors bankers across all levels, industry and product teams across the European platform, senior bankers involved in sponsor coverage, origination and execution, and the internal teams responsible for client data, transaction tracking and business development infrastructure. It says the role is expected to be predominantly internal initially, with client exposure increasing over time. Source

27 people have held London roles in Moelis' Restructuring team since 2018, against 12 in M&A Advisory. there is no separate sponsors unit for the firm's London office, so the alumni you can find will mostly have sat in restructuring or M&A rather than on this desk.

The firm

Moelis & Company describes itself as a leading global independent investment bank advising corporations, governments and financial sponsors, offering integrated financial advisory across all major industry sectors on mergers and acquisitions, recapitalisations and restructurings, capital markets transactions and other corporate finance matters, serving clients from 21 geographic locations. Source

139 people have held London roles at Moelis & Company as a whole since 2018.

What this posting signals

The stated work is sponsor-facing but desk-based: identifying, prioritising and tracking sponsor opportunities across sectors and geographies; preparing credentials, meeting packs, market updates, portfolio company analysis and thematic origination content; researching sponsors, portfolio companies, investment themes, adviser usage and transaction activity; and maintaining the internal coverage infrastructure, including sponsor priorities, relationship data, engagement tracking and business development analytics. Source

Read the responsibilities honestly before you apply: this is an origination and coverage-support seat, not an execution seat. The measures of success it lists are the quality of materials, the flow of information between teams and reliability under multiple workstreams. You will learn the European sponsor landscape cold and build fewer models than a peer in an M&A group. That is a genuine specialism, and it is also a harder story to tell if you later want to move to a fund on modelling ability.

The row was posted on 6 May 2026 and is still on our board in September. No deadline is stated, and a single lateral analyst seat closes the day someone accepts, not on a date. We do not mark a posting closed without evidence, so treat this as unverified rather than gone: if you have the year of experience, apply now and expect either silence or a fast process.

Are you eligible?

The requirements are a minimum of one year of experience in investment banking, transaction advisory or an accountancy firm, with ACA (or equivalent) qualified candidates also to be considered; a genuine interest in building relationships within the financial sponsor community; strong analytical skills including financial analysis and an understanding of key valuation concepts; high proficiency in Excel and PowerPoint; and a demonstrated interest in private equity and sponsor-driven transactions. Exposure to private equity clients, funds or sponsor-backed businesses is listed as advantageous rather than required. Source

The ACA line is the interesting one. Most bank analyst adverts want a banking analyst; this one names accountancy firms and chartered qualification explicitly, which makes it one of the few realistic doors from a Big Four transaction services or audit seat into a bulge-adjacent advisory floor. If that is your background, the gap to close in the interview is sponsor knowledge: know who is raising, who is selling, and which funds Moelis already advises.
