Investment Banking Associate - Financial Sponsors (Financial & Strategic Investors Group)
No deadline given. It closes when the places fill, which on a sought-after London desk is often weeks after it opens. Apply as if it closes tomorrow.
What this title actually means
Citi describes this as an intermediate level position in its Sponsors team, assisting private equity clients in raising funds in the capital markets and providing strategic advisory for mergers, acquisitions and other transactions in coordination with the Institutional Banking team. The associate is expected to work with senior bankers across EMEA on origination and execution across Citi's product set, with particular focus on financing and M&A. Source
A financial sponsors group is organised by client rather than by sector: one banker covers a fund across every deal and every product, sitting between the fund and the execution teams in M&A, leveraged finance, debt capital markets and equity capital markets, and originating mandates rather than executing them. A single sponsor generates revenue across a fund lifecycle through advisory, leveraged finance, refinancing, exits, hedging and fund finance, and top sponsors spread work across four or five banks while keeping two or three core advisers, so being top three matters and being fourth is a different business entirely. Associate in an investment banking title is the rung after analyst, and the advert confirms it by calling the role an intermediate level position and asking you to manage and mentor analysts. This is a lateral hire, most obviously from another bank's sponsors, M&A or leveraged finance desk, and not a seat a student or a first-jobber applies to.
The team
The seat is in the Financial and Strategic Investors Group, Citi's sponsors coverage team. The advert says the role is focused primarily on origination: owning asset campaigns, building buyer databases, generating content and ideas for clients, owning the client relationships, and developing intimate knowledge of the private equity clients' strategies, portfolios and investment criteria, while working alongside the sector, country and product teams in M&A, leveraged finance and equity capital markets. Source
About 119 people have held London roles in Citi's IBD since 2018, against 12 in M&A and 6 in Lev Fin, the two product teams a sponsors banker hands work to once a deal is live.
Sponsors coverage is a relationship seat rather than an execution one, and the interview follows the job: expect to be asked which funds you have covered, what they have bought and where their dry powder sits, rather than to build a paper leveraged buyout. If your experience is pure execution, the application has to show you know the buy side of the table by name.
The firm
Citi lists the role as full time in London, in the Institutional Banking job family group and the Investment Banking job family, with the stated objective of driving revenue by cross-selling the Citi platform while efficiently deploying the firm's capital and evaluating and managing risk. Source
About 318 people have held London roles at Citigroup as a whole since 2018, across the investment bank, the trading floor and the rest of the London business.
What this posting signals
The advert asks the associate to support the sponsor franchise in covering clients and to help increase Citi's market share in the sponsors business, coordinating across the bank to position the firm. Mentoring analysts, managing information flow, and providing credit and exposure information to them are written into the role. Source
Posted on 21 August 2026 with no start date, no class year and no deadline, this is a single seat being filled rather than an intake. There is no application window to wait for and no cohort to join.
With no deadline stated, a seat like this closes when the hiring team meets someone it wants. Apply in the first days it is open rather than assembling the perfect application over a fortnight.
Are you eligible?
The qualifications are headed 'recommended': a bachelor's degree in finance or a closely related area of business administration, a master's in business administration, experience evaluating corporate transactions and structures, experience creating financial analyses, demonstrated problem solving and organisational skills, clear written and verbal communication, experience assisting with client development, and the ability to work with teams and track business development by collecting research and analysing industry trends. The education line asks for a bachelor's or university degree or equivalent experience. Source
This is a Certified Role under the FCA and PRA Certification Regime, so an offer depends on being assessed fit and proper on honesty, integrity and reputation, financial soundness, and competence and capability, through extensive interviews, self-disclosures, permitted criminal record checks, regulated reference checks, credit checks and other background screening. Source
No minimum number of years is stated, which is unusual for an associate advert and makes the responsibilities the real specification. What it actually asks for is someone who has already evaluated transactions and structures, built the analysis under them and helped with client development, which is a post-analyst hire out of a live deal seat rather than a first job.
