Venture Capital Associate
No deadline given. It closes when the places fill, which on a sought-after London desk is often weeks after it opens. Apply as if it closes tomorrow.
What this title actually means
The posting asks for two to four years of experience in investment banking, management consulting, venture capital, big tech, or as a founder or operator in a high-growth technology business, and says a demonstrable passion for startups, emerging technologies and early-stage investing is essential. It wants outstanding analytical and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong relationships with founders and stakeholders across the ecosystem, a proactive and entrepreneurial mindset, and comfort operating in a fast-paced, unstructured environment, which it calls critical. A strong academic background in computer science, engineering, physics, biotech, materials science or a related STEM discipline is described as advantageous. Source
Say it plainly, because the row sits among student ones: this is an experienced hire and you cannot apply for it out of university. Venture Capital Associate at a fund means the person who sees the companies first, meeting founders, working out whether a market is real, and writing it up for a partner who will decide. Two to four years is the standard price of admission to that seat. The useful part of the specification is how wide the accepted backgrounds are: consulting, an operating role at a large technology company, or having built something yourself all count alongside banking, which is not true of most buy-side rows. The STEM line tells you the fund expects to look at technical companies and wants somebody who can follow the science without a translator.
The team
The fund is not named. Walker Hamill is the search firm; the client is kept confidential, and nothing on the page tells you the fund's size, its stage, its sectors or where in the ecosystem it sits. For a venture role that gap is bigger than it looks, because a seed fund and a growth fund are different jobs with the same title, and the STEM line hints at deep technology or life sciences without confirming any of it. The one thing you can do about it is ask early: the page carries direct contact links for the two consultants running the search, and a five-minute call establishes more than the advert does.
The firm
Walker Hamill says that from offices in London and Frankfurt it is active across Europe and widely recognised as one of the largest and most experienced private equity and growth capital search specialists, with a track record spanning four decades and thousands of completed searches. It says it hires at every level of an investment team, Associate, Principal and Partner, and also into investor relations, portfolio and value enhancement, and fund finance and accounting, and that its client base covers buyout funds of all sizes, growth and venture capital investors, real estate funds, co-investment vehicles, secondaries funds and funds of funds. Source
All of that describes the recruiter, not your employer. there is no cohort figure for this row, and any count we could show against Walker Hamill would be the search firm's own staff rather than the fund's, so there is nothing here that tells you how many people you would join or who has passed through the seat. Judge the opportunity when the fund is named, and treat everything before that point as a description of the process rather than of the job.
What this posting signals
No opening date and no deadline, and a retained search runs until the client hires rather than to a calendar. The only timing the page gives you is the screen: ten days of silence means the CV did not match the brief. In practice a search like this is decided by which three or four people the consultant puts in front of the fund, so the CV has to carry the two-to-four-year story on its face, and the founder-facing or technical parts of it should not be buried on page two.
The other mandates shown on the page, an investment analyst at a mid-cap technology, data and business services fund and an investment associate in Brussels at a large-cap private equity firm, are not clues about this role and should not be read as any steer on the client. What they do show is the shape of the desk running the search: the same consultants cover European investment-team hiring across venture, growth and buyout. That is an argument for making contact once and being on their list, rather than applying separately to each advert as if they were unconnected.
Are you eligible?
The stated bar in full: two to four years in investment banking, management consulting, venture capital, big tech or as a founder or operator in a high-growth technology business; a demonstrable passion for startups, emerging technologies and early-stage investing, called essential; outstanding analytical and interpersonal skills; relationship-building with founders and stakeholders across the ecosystem; and a proactive, entrepreneurial mindset with comfort in a fast-paced, unstructured environment, called critical. A STEM academic background is advantageous rather than required. There is no stated deadline, no degree class, no salary and no right-to-work or visa line on the page, and the application route is a CV upload with a short message. Source
The eligibility line to notice is the one that is not there. Nothing on the page addresses right to work or sponsorship, and with the employer unnamed you cannot check it yourself in the way you could on a firm's own careers site. Put the question to the consultant in the first call: it is one sentence for them to answer and it can save you an entire process. The same applies to the fund's location, since the row says Central London but the client is not named and the desk advertises across Europe.
