Team: Markets

What this title actually means

Citi is hiring intern analysts for its Markets team in London. The programme runs ten weeks, starts in June, opens with a one-week training programme in London, and then puts you through three rotations with different desks. Citi calls it highly competitive and selective, and says successful summer analysts will be considered for a full-time position after graduation. Source

What you would actually do over those ten weeks: collaborate with the other interns on projects and on pitching trade ideas, collect and analyse macro market and industry-specific information for your desk, shadow across various desks and asset classes on the floor, help prepare internal documentation and presentations, sit in on discussions with product heads across the business, and be given time and resources to learn how to make prices, manage risk and execute trades across asset classes. Source

Token by token: 'Markets' is Citi's trading division and a separate house from its Banking and Investment Banking side, with its own process, so applying to one is not applying to the other. 'Sales and Trading' puts you on the floor, on prices, flow and risk, rather than on models and pitch books. 'Summer Analyst' is the penultimate-year internship band. And '2027' is the summer you would actually work, not the year you apply.

The team

Markets at Citi serves corporates, institutions, governments and individual investors in 160 countries and territories, works trading floors in over 80 countries, and covers underwriting, structuring, securitisation, sales and trading and distribution across equities, commodities, credit, futures and foreign exchange. Source

After you submit the application, Citi asks which area of Markets you are most interested in: Sales, Trading, Structuring, Quantitative Analysis, or Securitisation and Financing. It uses that answer to align you to the most appropriate recruitment process. If you are successful, your summer rotations are then decided by desk availability and your stated preference, though you are encouraged to experience desks across Markets. Source

22 people have held London roles in Citi's Markets business since 2018.

That preference question is a routing decision, not a wish list. It decides whose interviews you sit and what they test you on, and a Structuring or Quantitative Analysis process is a different conversation from a Sales one. Work out which of the five you actually want before you submit, because 'why this desk' is a far better answer when it is about one desk. The rotations themselves are a separate matter and still depend on which desks have room that summer.

The firm

The office is 33 Canada Square, Canary Wharf, London E14 5LB, business casual, hybrid with up to two days a week working from home. Workday files the role under Job Family Group: Institutional Trading, Job Family: Trading. Source

318 people have held London roles at Citigroup as a whole since 2018.

What this posting signals

On the two things that decide how you treat this posting: 'Successful summer analysts will be considered for a full-time position after graduation', and 'Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis'. No closing date appears anywhere on the page. Source

A 2027 summer class posted on 1 September 2026 is the annual campus cycle opening on schedule. Because the seat is penultimate-year only, the full-time offer it feeds is the 2028 graduate job, which means the ten weeks are the interview for that job and this single application is carrying more weight than it looks. Treat it as your main shot at Citi's trading floor rather than one of a dozen forms.

Ongoing review with no cut-off means the class fills as it goes rather than all at once in the spring. An application read in September competes against an empty pipeline; one submitted after Christmas is competing for whatever seats are left. Being ready in September is worth more here than any amount of polish in January.

Are you eligible?

You must be currently enrolled at a university and in your penultimate year, with an expected or achieved 2:1 or equivalent at undergraduate level in any degree discipline. Citi also asks for a good understanding of finance and an interest in Markets, proficiency in Microsoft Office and especially Excel, knowledge of VBA and Python which it calls highly desirable, and fluent written and spoken English. Source

'Penultimate year' is a hard gate, not a guideline: finalists and graduates are not eligible for this seat and should be looking at Citi's full-time analyst route, which the posting itself refers to. 'Any degree discipline' is meant just as literally in the other direction: the filter is the demonstrated interest in markets, which in practice means being able to talk about something you have actually traded, modelled or followed, not the subject printed on your certificate.
