Morgan Stanley's Investment Banking Division is looking for an Associate to join its EMEA Financial Institutions Group in London, covering the Benelux region, posted 9 July 2026. The posting describes FIG's clients as leading European financial institutions - banks, insurers, wealth and asset managers, the broader market infrastructure space and the growing fintech space including payments, InsurTech and investment platforms - and says the group works on domestic and cross-border M&A, corporate restructurings, recapitalisations, IPOs, debt capital markets transactions, public-to-private transactions, takeover defences and investor relations advisory. FIG runs a different analytical framework from the rest of coverage banking, and valuing a bank like a corporate in an interview loses you the room. Everything flows through the regulatory lens - CET1, leverage ratios, MREL, Solvency II - because banks are capital-constrained and cannot grow assets freely. P/E multiples are useless; you work in net interest income, net revenue, operating profit, ROTE and justified price-to-tangible-book. The liability side is existential: deposits, funding structure and refinancing risk matter as much as the asset book. Each sub-sector then has its own metric stack - embedded value and VNB margin for life insurers, combined ratios for P&C, revenue yield in basis points for asset managers, take rate and net revenue retention for fintechs, never TPV alone. Regulatory approval timelines from the PRA, FCA and ECB run six to eighteen months on M&A, which is why FIG deals take as long as they do. Source
Four tokens, each narrowing the last. 'Investment Banking Division' is the advisory house, not markets or investment management. 'FIG' is the coverage group - you cover an industry, financial institutions, rather than a product like M&A or leveraged finance. 'Benelux' is the country sub-team inside EMEA FIG: your clients are the banks, insurers and payments companies of the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg, advised from London. 'Associate' is the band above analyst. The title as printed also ends in a stray dash, which is a scraping artefact on our side, not part of the role.
The team
The team is FIG Benelux: the Benelux coverage seat inside Morgan Stanley's EMEA Financial Institutions Group in London. The posting says the group devises and executes innovative, customised solutions to clients' most challenging issues, that its clients comprise leading European financial institutions - banks, insurers, wealth and asset managers, the broader market infrastructure space and the growing fintech space - and that it excels in domestic and international, cross-border transactions including M&A, corporate restructurings, recapitalisations, IPOs, debt capital markets transactions, public-to-private transactions, takeover defences and investor relations advisory. Associates work on M&A, equity and debt capital markets transactions and business development projects while interacting directly with senior-level decision-makers at some of the world's largest financial institutions as well as smaller, emerging growth clients. Source
The Associate's own responsibilities as listed: managing and assisting in the execution of corporate finance transactions including IPOs, M&A and strategic advisory; performing financial analysis, valuation, strategic business analysis and detailed industry research; contributing to team discussions and client meetings; providing rapid and accurate market judgments to colleagues and clients; preparing and delivering client presentations clearly and compellingly; acting as a mentor and role model to Analysts and promoting team culture; and working closely with senior bankers in the team and across other groups, both across the broader Investment Banking Division and Global Capital Markets. 203 people have held London roles in Morgan Stanley's IBD since 2018, against 13 in Coverage. That is the division around this seat, not the desk: there is no separate figure for FIG or for its Benelux team, and a single-region coverage seat inside a group of that size is a small room in a large building. Read 203 as the building you would walk into, not the team you would sit on.
A country coverage seat is a relationship job with a language attached. The clients are in Amsterdam, Brussels and Luxembourg while the desk is in London, so the work is travel, local market knowledge and knowing which Dutch or Belgian institution is about to need advice. The posting puts advanced Dutch as 'an additional benefit' rather than a requirement, which means it is a tiebreaker between two otherwise equal candidates - worth mentioning if you have it, not worth abandoning the application if you do not.

What this posting signals
One Associate seat, one named country desk, no start date and no class: this is a lateral hire into an existing team, either replacing someone who left or adding a pair of hands to a busy patch of coverage. It is not a graduate route and no amount of enthusiasm converts it into one. The field is small - people who already do financial institutions M&A and can talk about the Benelux market - which is precisely why a well-matched application gets read here and would not at a summer programme.
The row opened on 9 July 2026 and carries no deadline, because seats like this do not have one; they close when someone accepts. Two months open on a specialist coverage seat means it is either nearly done or genuinely hard to fill, and in both cases waiting costs you. We do not mark a posting closed without positive evidence from the firm, so treat it as live but unverified.
Are you eligible?
Stated qualifications: a top-class master's degree or overseas equivalent in or related to finance, economics, econometrics or engineering from a leading university; fluent English, with advanced Dutch an additional benefit; relevant investment banking (corporate finance or M&A) experience or equivalent required; familiarity with the sector and corporate landscape desirable; strong analytical and modelling skills, which the firm calls critical to success as an Associate; knowledge of basic accounting and financial concepts and the ability to analyse and value businesses; strong leadership and management qualities; a strong understanding of professional ethics and the regulatory environment; excellent oral and written communication; and the ability to prioritise and handle multiple tasks under tight deadlines. Source
There are two hard gates here and they stack: a master's-level degree, and prior investment banking experience. A student or a graduate with only internships behind them is outside both, and no cover letter fixes that. If that is you, the useful thing to take from this row is not the application - it is the information that Morgan Stanley's Benelux financial institutions coverage is short-handed in London, and that the entry route to it is the firm's analyst programmes rather than this door.
Nothing on the page addresses right to work or sponsorship, which for a lateral hire is normal and means the answer is whatever the recruiter says. If you need sponsorship, get that settled in the first exchange rather than after three rounds.

No deadline given, so it closes when the places fill.
Most junior seats are filled by someone writing to the right person before a portal
fills up. Here is one of the people Morgan Stanley publishes, in full.

The route that always works, and the one they are most likely to read.
The firm publishes this person, and publishes no address we could read for anyone here, so there is no pattern to show you either. Search their name and firm on LinkedIn and write from your own account.
